Can an Employer Reject a Resignation?
In many US at-will jobs, your employer cannot simply refuse a clear resignation and force you to keep working—but contracts, notice periods, and how they set your last day can still matter. This is general information, not legal advice.
What usually happens
Once you resign in writing with an effective date, most employers process the exit even if they are unhappy. They may ask you to leave sooner than your proposed last day, place you on garden leave, or walk you out the same day—especially in sensitive roles.
When rejection language shows up
Some managers say “we don’t accept this” while they negotiate timing, try a counteroffer, or check a contract clause. Push for clarity in writing: your resignation date, whether they are ending employment earlier, and what pay continues through.
What you should do
Send a clear written notice, keep a copy, and follow up with HR if your manager argues. If you have a fixed-term contract, non-compete, or required notice, read that document and get professional advice for your situation.
