Immediate Resignation Letter Template

Use this when you cannot give standard notice. State that you resign effective immediately (or name today’s date), keep the tone professional, and check your contract for any impact on pay or references.

When immediate resignation makes sense

Immediate notice is for situations where staying is unsafe, impossible, or already untenable—not a casual shortcut around two weeks. If you can give even a few days, prefer short notice resignation so coverage is clearer. Immediate resignations can affect references, PTO payout, or contractual notice—ask HR about your case.

Still write it down: a clear effective date protects you more than a verbal-only exit.

Immediate resignation FAQ

When is immediate resignation appropriate?

When you cannot serve a normal notice period—for example a personal emergency, health situation, or safety concern. Check your contract for consequences. This is general information, not legal advice.

Will I still get paid for unused PTO?

It depends on your state, contract, and company policy. Ask HR in writing about final pay and accrued vacation. Keep your resignation email for your records.

Should I explain why I am leaving immediately?

A short neutral line is optional. You do not need a detailed story. Avoid blaming individuals in the written record.

Can I still get a reference?

It depends on the relationship and company policy. Staying professional in the letter and offering limited remote handoff help can protect your reputation.

Is immediate resignation the same as job abandonment?

A written resignation that states you are leaving effective immediately is usually clearer than stopping work without notice. Still follow any required company process if you can.
